Heritage Notes: July 25, 2019

Welcome back families!  I hope you had a wonderful summer filled with adventures, relaxation, good books, and plenty of fun.  Please review the following information to prepare for the upcoming school year.  Please review the information carefully and contact our office if you have any questions.  Supply lists, the school calendar, and other information is attached to this email.

Welcome Mr. Chavarria, Mrs. Kaplan, and Mrs. Davidson!

We are pleased to announce that Mario Chavarria is our new night time custodian.  You will see Mr. Chavarria helping with dismissal and facilitating events around campus.  Welcome also to new teachers Cheri Kaplan and Susan Davidson.  Mrs. Kaplan and Mrs. Davidson are experienced teachers in Tustin Unified and served as instructional coaches for the past few years.  We are incredibly fortunate to have such experienced and artful teachers joining our team.  Welcome to Mr. Chavarria, Mrs. Kaplan, and Mrs. Davidson!

Data Confirmation

Thank you to those of you who have completed data confirmation for the upcoming school year!  All students, including those new to Heritage or Tustin Unified, MUST complete this process as soon as possible.

Over the next week you will begin to receive messages from Tustin Unified regarding data confirmation.  Data confirmation is a separate process from enrollment.  This process includes updating emergency contact information and medical records, as well as reading all handouts and reviewing district policies.  This process includes confirming the acceptable use policy, which allows your child to use iPads at school which are essential to our Heritage program.  All students must complete data confirmation annually, prior to the start of the school year.  This includes students who are entering TK or kindergarten, as well as students new to Heritage/Tustin Unified, even those who recently enrolled in school.

*More information regarding data confirmation will be sent from the district shortly. This is an annual process that ensures we have updated contact information and health information for all children. You can complete this process by logging into your Aeries Parent Portal Account.

How do I find out my child’s teacher?

Tustin Unified uses Aeries Parent Portal to share your child’s 2019-20 teacher, rather than posting class lists.  To see your teacher, log-in to your Parent Portal account on August 12 at 4:30.  We highly suggest you complete your data confirmation prior to this date, in the event you have any issues logging in.

Parking and Arrival/Dismissal Procedures

As with most schools, parking can be challenging at peak times at Heritage Elementary.  To ease our parking needs, we encourage families to use our drop-off (grades TK-5) and pick-up line (at the 1-5 dismissal only) in front of the MPR.  For families who live near Heritage, we encourage walking to and from school via Lansdowne or the back gate/walking path off Severyn’s Road.  This gate will be open daily from 7:50-8:00 and immediately after school.  The gate will also be open for kindergarten dismissal; we encourage neighborhood families to use the walking gate for all arrivals and dismissals.  **There is ample parking along the street near this gate for commuter families, if you prefer to park here during drop-off and pick-up.

School Attendance

Heritage Elementary and Tustin Unified are committed to providing a high quality education to all students.  Please carefully review the enclosed school calendar prior to scheduling appointments for your child or making any vacation plans.  Any time out of the classroom is lost learning time.  This is especially important at a project-based learning school, as all work is done in the classroom.  Students are expected to be at school on time and remain at school all day, every day.  Students who arrive late or leave school early are marked tardy, which is reflected on student report cards and permanent records, in addition to absences.

KINDERGARTEN ASSESSMENTS (new this year)

Date: July 30, 2019

Time: Appointment times were mailed in June

If you did not receive your kinder mailing, please contact the office for your appointment time.  TK students do not come to kindergarten assessments and are assessed after the year begins.

 

TK and KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION

Date: August 12, 2019

Time: 2:00 - 3:00 pm

Incoming transitional kindergarten and kindergarten students and families are encouraged to attend orientation to learn about school procedures, visit the classrooms, and answer frequently asked questions.  TK and Kindergarten class lists will be posted prior to the event.

 

19-20 CLASS ASSIGNMENTS POSTED ON AERIES (grades 1-5)

Date: August 12, 2019 at 4:30 pm

Class assignments posted on Aeries Parent Portal.  Log-in anytime in the evening to see your child’s 19-20 teacher.

 

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

Date: August 13, 2019

Students may arrive to campus at 7:45.  Students must be picked up promptly at their ending time in our pick-up area.  There is no supervision before 7:45 or after dismissals.  

 

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT 

Date: August 14, 2019

Time: 6:00-7:00 

Join us for an important informational meeting in your child’s classroom to learn about curriculum and classroom expectations.

*This event is for adults only as we do not provide supervision during the presentations or on the playground.  Please arrange for childcare for your child(ren).

The back gate off Severyn’s Road will be open for parents attending Back to School Night.

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday: 10:00 a.m. to 1:28 p.m.

Wednesday (early release day): 10:00 a.m. to 1:03 p.m.

Monday - Friday: 8:00-1:34

Kindergarten Minimum Days (No modified Wednesdays): 8:00-12:57

 

Grades 1-5

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday: 8:00-2:28

Modified Wednesdays (Grades 1-5): 8:00-1:14

 

Modified Wednesdays and Early Dismissal Days

Reminder: Every Wednesday is a minimum day for Later Gator TK and grades 1-5. School is dismissed at 1:03 for TK and 1:14 for grades 1-5. (Note: Kindergarten will not have modified Wednesdays.)

The following days are also minimum days for all grades:
